After scrubbing the bird poo off the drive one too many times, I’ve researched how to stop them from sitting there in the first place.

Here are seven ways to stop birds from sitting on your TV aerial: 

1. Install a scarecrow.
2. Use bird spikes.
3. The cable tie method.
4. Attach reflective scare rods.
5. Cover the TV aerial with netting.
6. Use wind chimes. 
7. Apply bird-repellent gel to your aerial.

I’ll discuss these ways of deterring birds in more detail. Hopefully one of these works for you, and helps to keep your TV aerial bird-free and clean.

1. Install a Scarecrow

They’re not just for fields! Scarecrows were first invented hundreds of years ago to deter crows from eating seeds and fruit on farms. The reason they’re still around is because they’re still a highly effective method of preventing birds from coming to the area, and you can install one near your TV aerial. 

Below are some examples of scarecrows that you could use: 

Large bird kite. Attaching a large bird kite to your roof and close to your TV aerial fools smaller birds into thinking there’s a bird of prey.

The Laptony Bird Scarer Flying Kite from Amazon UK looks incredibly realistic and has reflective eyes, which is scary for birds. You’ve probably seen them work against seagulls in some coastal towns:

Cat statue. Most suburban birds understand the risks of cats, and a cat statue can help deter them. We have three cats, but they don’t go near the roof (that we know of!).

The Garden Mile Black Powder Coated Black Cat from Amazon UK comes in a three-pack and you can attach it to your roof next to the aerial. You’ve probably seen these around – pubs tend to use them a lot.

Fake snake. Birds are also scared of snakes, and you can position a realistic-looking toy snake close to your aerial to deter the birds. 

Homemade scarecrow. If you love craft projects, you could create a homemade scarecrow from random fabric scraps, buttons, and other craft materials you have lying around the home. 

Fake bird of prey. Owls and hawks hunt smaller birds, and installing an artificial bird of prey near your TV aerial would do an excellent job of keeping them away.   

Garden balls. Garden balls are inflatable balls that resemble a predator’s eyes. You can tie them to your TV aerial to scare the birds away. De-Bird Repellent Scary Eye Balloons from Amazon UK are tear-resistant, weatherproof, and come in a three-pack to use in various places.  

Installing a scarecrow is a wonderfully simple method of deterring birds. The only drawback is that it may prevent smaller and more desirable birds from coming into your garden (source: RSPB) so it’s a toss-up between wanting songbirds to visit, and preventing bigger birds making a mess.

2. Use Bird Spikes

Bird spikes are also called pigeon spikes or anti-roosting spikes and consist of a series of sharp metal needles that make it impossible for a bird to perch. They don’t actually land on them – they just avoid them.

You can install them on your TV aerial or roof, and they aren’t expensive. The LINZI Stainless Steel Bird Spikes for Pigeons from Amazon UK is an excellent example. It’s easy to install, and it will last for ages due to its stainless steel composition. (source: Pigeon Control Resource Centre)

I’d recommend getting a qualified person to fit them rather than climbing around on the roof yourself, though.

3. The Cable Tie Method

Don’t feel like spending a lot of money on preventing birds from making themselves at home on your TV aerial? If so, you might want to try the cable tie method. 

You’ll need a large pack of cable ties and some time – you will have to cover your entire TV aerial with cable ties to make it an uncomfortable place for birds. A bit like decorating a Christmas tree.

You can get a pack of 100 high-quality cable ties online or at a DIY store for less than £10, making it a cost-effective way to keep your TV aerial free of birds. 

4. Attach Reflective Scare Rods

Birds are generally afraid of shiny and reflective objects (with perhaps the exception of magpies). Although scientists don’t fully understand this, they believe it’s because birds fear their own reflections, and shiny or reflective things confuse them.  

With this in mind, a reflective scare rod can effectively deter birds from perching on your TV aerial. Reflective spiral rods are made from reflective plastic or metal, are spiral-shaped, and twirl around in the wind. 

CGSGDK Bird Scare Devices from Amazon UK come in a pack of 40, allowing you to attach one on each of your aerial bars. Costing less than £20, you can use the remaining spiral rods in your garden, patio, or anywhere else you want to keep bird-free. 

If you have many old CDs lying around, you could take the opportunity to reuse them. All you’ll need is some string to create a reflective hanging object. 

Alternatively, you could attach reflective tape to the TV aerial’s bars. Choose waterproof reflective tape to withstand rain and other weather elements if you go for this option. (source: Pests.org)

5. Cover the TV Aerial With Netting

Covering your TV aerial with netting will prevent birds from perching on it. Although they’ll probably still be able to sit in the netting, they won’t be able to nest and make a mess near your aerial. 

Bird netting is inexpensive, and you can buy it in rolls. KINGLAKE Green Garden Netting from Amazon UK comes in a 4m x 10m (13ft x 32.8ft) roll and is UV-resistant.

You can use it to cover your TV aerial by nailing or glueing it down, and you can use the remaining netting to protect your vegetable garden or bedding plants. (source: Oregon State University Extension Service)

6. Use Wind Chimes

Birds are small and sensitive creatures, and they shy away from the sound of wind chimes. Tying some wind chimes to your TV aerial can deter birds, but they may not be effective on a still and windless day. 

If you want to use wind chimes, consider using them together with another method, such as reflective tape or a reflective scare rod. 

This also depends on how much YOU like wind chimes. They can get loud in a breeze!

7. Apply Bird-Repellent Gel

Bird-repellent gel creates a slippery surface that birds won’t easily perch on or turn into a nesting place. 

After applying the gel, it lasts for up to two years, and since it’s transparent, it won’t stain your aerial or roof. 

Bird-X 54-1 Proof Bird Repellent Gel from Amazon UK comes in a 10 oz (284g) tube and is non-toxic. You apply it with a caulking gun, and you can easily remove it to apply more, usually after two years.

Overall, these are the best ways to stop birds from sitting on your TV aerial. I hope that you’ll find one or more of them practical for you, regardless of your budget and time availability. In the end, we used the fake cat -just because it was quiet, permanent, and we love cats – but what works for us might not work for you. Good luck!

Just like us, puppies need high levels of protein and nutrients in order to grow properly. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to see puppies with sensitive stomachs.

If you got your puppy from a breeder, be sure to keep feeding it the same food if possible. That way, you already know the dog likes it and can process the food well. Then, moving forward, you can typically purchase the same brand in the growing stages of your dogs’ life.

If you just notice small changes in their stool, it’s possible that the new food is too rich for them, and they need time to adjust. Always introduce new food slowly, removing a little of their old and replacing it with the new over the course of a week. 

After seven days, they should be eating more of the new food, allowing their little tummies to get used to it slowly.

This senior blend (from Amazon.co.uk) is a perfect food for ageing dogs who don’t need the same levels of carbohydrates as younger dogs and puppies. As they become less active, they require less energy. After all, if you keep your older dog on the same higher fat diet, they would likely gain weight.

That said, older dogs still need protein. So, it’s better to adjust their calorie intake and make the move to different proteins, like fish, which also offer fatty acids and nutrients that will help their joints.

In addition to joint health, fish is known to improve your senior dog’s skin and coat, keeping it healthy for longer.

Since this is kibble, you may need to soak it in water if your dog has trouble with hard foods. Alternatively, try this Barking Heads Golden Years wet food. It’s grain-free and specifically formulated to help with joint health and to aid in healthy digestion. 

Is Raw Food Good For Dogs With Sensitive Stomachs?

Raw food is good for dogs with sensitive stomachs as it is less processed, contains few (if any) grains, and is easily digested. However, it’s also rich in protein and fat, which could be an issue for some dogs. Plus, it is more likely to be contaminated with bacteria than cooked food.

There is a big debate surrounding the raw food diet, with owners and vets disagreeing on its benefits. 

On the one hand, there are no artificial preservatives, fillers or bulking agents, like oats and rice. Plus, raw diets have very little sugar or carbs which are the sources of many allergies. Not only that, but your dog can absorb more nutrients from a raw diet. (Source: FitDog)

However, handling raw meat is constantly a risk, and there is always a chance of bacteria being present in the meat. Typically, we cook the meat and kill off anything harmful. But if there is bacteria present and you feed it to your dog raw, you run the risk of making the sick. 

In fact, the CDC made the following statement regarding raw food for dogs:

“Raw diets, especially raw meat diets, are not recommended because of the risk for salmonellosis and other infections that can affect pets and their owners.” (Source: American Veterinary Medical Association)

In addition, a lot of people feed their dogs raw bones as part of this diet, which can be very harmful if they chip. Small pieces can get lodged in your dog’s system, and it could need surgery to have it removed. 

Ultimately, it’s your choice what you feed your dog. If it has severe allergies, the raw diet might be worth looking into. Just remember to do a lot of research and start out slow. Transitioning from kibble to raw right away could cause your dog to get sick.

Other Tips on Helping Your Dog with a Sensitive Stomach

Unlike people, who would avoid something that made them sick, most dogs will keep eating their kibble until you, as the owner, figure out it’s making them sick. 

As a dog owner, you need to watch your dog and take note of everything from their demeanour and energy levels to their poop, how it looks, and even how it smells. 

If you’re unsure what is making your dog sick or tired, don’t panic. Try giving them another type of food to see if they perk up. If not, speak with your vet about getting them tested. 

If you know that your dog has a sensitive stomach, here are a few things you can do to make them more comfortable:

1. Narrow down the cause by trying different foods with different key ingredients.
2. Try using a slow-feeder, as their discomfort could just be coming from eating too much too fast.
3. Don’t leave anything out that your dog could get to, especially anything that might contain the food they’re allergic to.
4. Reduce the number of treats they get, as some dogs can get sick from too much rich food.
5. If using supplements, do plenty of research and speak with your vet before adding anything to your dog’s food.

Your dog can’t tell you that it’s feeling sick, and it doesn’t get a choice about what it eats. So, make sure you monitor your dog when eating and after, and always get the best quality food you can. If none of the first few key ingredients are a form of protein, don’t buy it!

However, if they like to explore further than your garden this could make them susceptible to danger. They could consume a toxic plants, get lost or be involved in a road traffic accident – any pet owner’s worst nightmare!

Luckily for you, there are ways to let your cat outside, so they can do all the fun stuff like sunbathing, but at the same time, keeping in the garden. We have three cats, and two go where they please, but the third has had to be kept in the garden for health reasons. Here are some solutions we looked at:

Cat-Proof Fencing Guide

In this article I’ve listed a few ways to stop your cat from escaping, but we’ll start with the most popular – and that’s a cat-proof fence. You might also be interested in this if you want to keep other people’s cats out of your garden, too.

Install a Metal (Not Wooden) Fence

Cats have excellent climbing and jumping abilities, and their claws mean that they can climb most things. Wooden fences are no good here, because they just dig their claws in and up they go.

However, installing a metal type of fence should stop your cat from being able to climb up at all as they can’t get grip on the smooth metal. Don’t choose a fancy design – any swirly details will be treated as cat steps.

Ensure that the fence itself is tall enough so that your cat can’t just jump over it, an average cat can jump up to 2.4 metres (7.8ft) so your fence should be higher than this!

A Fence Topper on an Existing Fence

If you already have a wooden fence, it’s usually not going to be worth the effort and expense to take it down and put a metal one up instead.

There is an effective solution, though. Your entire garden can be cat-proofed by putting up by adding a fence topper to your existing fence.

Fences don’t often deter cats on their own so the fence topper is the thing that will stop your cat from escaping and it can be constructed in multiple ways.

Tips on Fence Toppers:

• The fence topper should be constructed at a right angle from the top of the fence
  
• It should jut out for at least half a metre
  
• The wire itself can be stapled to the wooden fence or you can attach angled metal brackets to the fence and then tie some form of wire, such as chicken wire, to these brackets.
  
• You can use either a fixed framework or stretcher wires with brackets. The fence topper itself can be made from rigid or soft wiring, with rigid wiring probably being more durable but could also be easier for your cat to climb. Think of a wobbly tightrope rather than a wire-step!
  
• If you are still worried that your cat may be able to climb on this topper, you can add another horizontal section that is parallel to the original fence. A cat is unlikely to be able to climb both sections, so will drop back into the garden and will be unable to escape. 

If your garden has a gate, remember to add the topper on top of this too! It can be constructed in the same way, but just not attached to the sections on either side so that the gate can still be opened.

You’ll need to block the bottom of the gate too, this can be done with chicken wire, leaving just enough room at the bottom so it doesn’t catch on the ground, or placing a large paving stone to block the gap. 

Don’t forget – it’s probably a good idea to ask your neighbours for permission if you share fences before building anything! Also, depending on the height of the fence, there may be planning implications as well.

How To Stop Your Cat Climbing The Fence

If you want to stop your cat climbing or jumping the fence entirely, there are a few things that you can try. 

• Cat deterrent – A cat deterrent is a battery operated device that uses motion detection to sense when your cat is approaching. It will then emit a high pitched noise that cats don’t like which, after a few times, will ensure that they don’t go near the fence at all. 
  
• Natural deterrents – Placing a natural deterrent close to the fence will stop your cat from going near the fence and ensure they won’t climb up it. For example, a citrus scent is offensive to a cat’s nose so planting citrus-smelling plants will ensure your cat stays away.
  
• Train your cat – Although not a short-term solution, one way to stop your cat from climbing up the fence is to train them not to. Some cats are more easily trained than others, however. Every time your cat goes outside, go with them. If they approach the fence make a loud noise or hiss at them to deter them from approaching. If you keep this up, eventually your cat will not want to approach the fence as they are expecting you to make a noise that they don’t like. 

Outdoor Cat Enclosures (AKA Catios)

Sometimes, a fence or topper isn’t always practical, especially if you share fences with your neighbours or have a communal garden. It also doesn’t stop neighbouring cats getting into your garden from the outside, and then getting stuck as they can’t climb back out. 

In this case, a purpose-built outdoor cat enclosure may be a better option for you. The enclosure can be built wherever you want it to be, but works best when it allows the cat access to a cat flap or open door so it can get in and out as it pleases and you don’t have to place the cat into the enclosure each time.

However, if this is not possible then you can work around this by giving them some sort of house to shelter in until you can bring them back inside. Here’s a popular one on Amazon:

The enclosure can be made from wire or PVC and can have a roof, or can have an overhang as described previously to prevent your cat from escaping.

If the enclosure allows your cat access to the house and you leave the cat out when you’re not home, make sure there is no way for anyone to enter the enclosure and use it to get into your home. 

Cat Runs

A cat run is generally smaller than a cat enclosure, but they can be tailored to suit yours and your pet’s needs.

They can be built horizontally or vertically depending on how much space you’ve got and you can often buy them pre-built, although constructing your own can be cheaper.

A cat run can also help to protect local wildlife (i.e. songbirds!) from your curious cat and can keep your pet away from potentially dangerous plants in your garden. 

Cat Balcony (Cat Netting)

If you live in a flat with a balcony, but are scared to let your cat outside in case it escapes over the railings – don’t worry! Your balcony can be cat proofed just as much as a garden can. Use floor to ceiling netting to cat proof any ledges so that they can’t climb up and jump off.

You could also build a miniature cat enclosure or cat run if you don’t want to completely block off your balcony, however this may not provide them with as much space if your balcony is small. 

Roller Bars

Attaching roller bars to the top of your fence will stop your cat being able to jump over the fence.

Although they’re pretty stable on their feet, the roller bars will move every time your cat touches them making them feel uneasy, forcing them to jump back into your garden. 

These tend to be more expensive than simple wire, but they’re pretty effective because they will always move when the cat puts its weight on the bars.

Anti-Cat Spikes 

Anti-cat spikes sound terrible and scary, but they have blunted spikes.

These spikes are attached to the top of your fence to stop them climbing atop the fence. The spikes are blunt enough to not cause any harm to your cat, but they will not like the sensation under their feet when they walk on them.

Ensure that the fence is high enough so that they can’t simply jump over the spikes. I’ve not tried these myself, but have heard a couple of people saying they’re effective.

Other Solutions For Cat-Proofing

Before constructing anything to stop your cat escaping (or spending money), you may want to consider resolving any issues that may push your cat to resort to this behaviour in the first place.

Some things to consider:

Are You Providing Enough Food And Water?

One of the reasons your cat may wish to jump over the fence is in search of further food. As the owner of a greedy cat I know that this is sometimes not something you can easily control.

However, it might be one of those obviously overlooked things – ensure that you’re meeting their needs, otherwise your cat will have no choice but to jump the fence. Check that you don’t have a cat-loving neighbor who is feeding your cat tasty treats when they visit them, or they’ll always try to go there.

Provide A Safe Environment

Make sure that you’re providing your cat a safe environment that they won’t want to escape. This includes keeping them away from any children’s rough play, loud noises, or things that may scare them. 

Cats are VERY territorial and sometimes get stressed, or react badly to new arrivals (babies or new pets), so try to introduce new things gradually to them.

Neuter Your Cat

Neutering your cat (whether they’re male or female) will provide multiple benefits, but many people don’t realise that neutering can also make a cat less likely to roam away from home. 

Accompany Your Cat When They Are Outdoors

Perhaps a last resort, as it needs your time and effort, but you could allow your cat to roam freely in your outdoor space, but do so whilst under your supervision. This way you can ensure they’re not going anywhere you don’t want them to go, but are still giving them freedom to explore outside.

However, sometimes they need a helping hand to get out knots or debris from their fur, which is where a cat brush comes in.

Our eldest cat, Fudge has started to have a bit of weakness in his spine so he can’t bend and groom his lower back. After going to the vet to have matted hair shaved off, it was time to invest in a couple of brushes for cats.

Even if your cat isn’t having problems, regular brushing can improve muscle tone and stimulate the production of natural oils that make your cat’s fur shinier. It can also provide a great bonding experience for you and your cat!

If you’re not sure which brush for cats is best for you, here are the two we use and some others we shortlisted. We use a two brush combo – one to fine comb and another ‘mitt’ to remove shedding hair.

A cleaning slicker brush such as this one has fine, short wires that are close together to make it easier to untangle really stubborn, matted coats such as those on elderly cats that struggle to groom themselves properly.

They come in different sizes. We have the medium-sized brush. It’s made of aluminum with a wooden handle so it’ll be durable and should last a long time.

The bristles are made from fine metal, so ensure that you’re brushing your cat gently to avoid damaging their skin or causing them pain.

Extra care should be taken on sensitive areas, such as the stomach and tail, though Fudge rubs his face against it when he can!

Some people use slicker brushes on pile rugs to brush out any knots and debris, so it can even be used to brush your pet’s hair out of carpets and rugs too! 

It’s easy to remove the cat hair from the brush, just pick it out using your fingers as you would hair from your hairbrush.

One side has durable metal bristles that work to detangle matted fur and remove any unwanted debris that may be stuck – there’s always some kind of leaf or dirt stuck in my cat’s fur!

How Can I Brush My Cat Without Getting Scratched?

Some cats are perfectly comfortable with you brushing their fur with a metal brush, but most are not.

If your cat feels scared or intimidated, their natural reaction will be to scratch – and brushing may scare them.

Although a few scratches here and there may be unavoidable, there are a few things you can try to make brushing a more enjoyable experience for both your cat – and you.

Use a few treats – Cats aren’t as motivated by food as dogs are, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t appreciate a treat and allow you to brush them in return.

If you repeat this behaviour, rewarding them everytime they allow you to brush them then they will soon learn that brushing means they’ll get a treat and may be a lot more accepting.

I’d suggest giving them a treat that they don’t normally have (we use tuna flakes) – this way they’ll associate that specific treat with brushing.

Start as soon as possible – If you get your cat as a kitten, it’s a great time to introduce them to brushing.

Due to their size and wriggly nature, it can be hard to brush a kitten, but a few brushes every now and then will introduce them to the behaviour and means that they won’t grow up and be scared of being brushed – they’ll already know what it is.

Make sure they’re calm – You have to choose your time wisely. The best time to brush your cat is when they’re relaxed and calm, otherwise you’re just likely to wind them up.

If your cat likes to curl up on your lap in the evening, I’d suggest keeping a brush within reach for when the perfect moment arises.

Know what your cat does and doesn’t like – It’s important to know where your cat likes being touched. If they hate their tummy being rubbed, then it’s likely they won’t like it being brushed.

Be careful of their sensitive areas, such as head and tail. Make sure to brush with the fur – don’t brush backwards.

Don’t brush too hard – If you come across a knot within their fur, don’t try and yank it out. Work the bristles of the brush gently through the knot and stop if your cat doesn’t like it – it normally takes me a few times to successfully get a knot out.

Make sure to never cut a knot out of their fur, it’s very easy to slip and your cat’s skin is delicate! It could easily end up in them being hurt.

If your cat’s fur is extremely matted and you can’t get it out yourself, take them to a professional. Our vet shaved Fudge’s matted hair in a few minutes. He looked weird for a couple of weeks, but is fine now.

Is It Possible To Brush Your Cat Too Much?

The length of your cat’s hair all determines how often it’ll need brushing to avoid hairballs and reduce shedding.

Short-Haired Cats

Short-haired cats, such as a British Shorthair, should be brushed a few times a week. Brushing cats with shorter hair too often can result in skin irritation, or even bald patches.

Medium-Haired Cats

Mixed breeds tend to fall more into medium-haired. In terms of grooming, they can be brushed several times a week – or even daily if they tend to shed a lot.

Long-Haired Cats

Long-haired cats, such as a Ragdoll or Maine Coon should be brushed daily as this fur type is more likely to get matted or knotted. As mentioned earlier, if you can’t get the knots out yourself it’s best to get them professionally groomed!

This dried food by James Wellbeloved gets rave reviews – it’s a great dried food choice as it’s hypoallergenic and made especially for those with digestive and skin issues, which are common in French bulldogs.

There are multiple flavour options and size options too if you just want to trial the food first.

The meat mixed with rice ensures that the food is gentle on your dog’s sensitive stomach and contains enough soluble and insoluble fibres to support the digestive system.

One of the main issues with raw dog food is that you also have to watch out for food recalls. Bacteria can thrive in raw food, but Zenoo have come up with a genius solution and have freeze-dried fresh raw quality ingredients, so it’s raw food, without the risks. You answer a few questions about your dog’s breed, weight, age, etc, and are given a unique food recipe – so you can be assured that your pup is getting all the essential nutrients that it needs to grow healthily.

One of my favourite things about this puppy food is that it contains DHA omega-3, which many other foods don’t.

This omega-3 supports bulldogs’ mental development and helps with learning and socialising, decreasing the risk of behavioural issues later in life.

You also never have to worry about food running out and will avoid having to do a mad dash to the shops to pick up whatever you can find – possibly upsetting your dog’s stomach.

This Royal Canin dog food is made especially for bulldogs over the age of 12 months.

One of my favourite things about this particular food is that the dry kibble itself is ergonomically designed to ensure that your dog chews the food to encourage movement in the jaw, which is great as we all know that bulldogs have a brachycephalic jaw that can cause issues later in life.

This also means that your dog won’t be able to eat as fast and swallow food whole (as bulldogs love to do) and give themselves indigestion.

The food is formulated to help reduce odour from stools and flatulence as it contains both fermentable and non-fermentable fibre and the only source of starch is that which naturally occurs in the rice.

It also helps your dog to maintain a healthy weight throughout its life and supports healthy skin and joints as they’re getting ample amounts of nutrients.

Many people have said that this is the only food that doesn’t give their bulldogs awful flatulence, and that they always switch back if they ever try anything else.

How Much Should I Feed My French Bulldog?

Naturally, each size and breed of dog needs a different amount of food. The amount of food you should feed your bulldog depends on his or her age, too.

French bulldog puppies are still growing and will burn calories faster so need to be fed more regularly than adult dogs.

It’s always best to feed your French bulldog 2 to 3 times a day and not all at once – they scoff their food down quickly and tend to overeat if you let them!

It’s always best to check with your vet the type of food you’re feeding your dog and how much is best for your individual Frenchie.

As a general guide, an average adult French bulldog should eat 128 g to 165g every 24 hours. However, this depends on:

• How active they are
• How old they are
• How many treats they tend to have per day
• Whether they are overweight or underweight to begin with
• The calories in the food (wet, dry, mixed are all different)

Most pet food packaging has recommended serving sizes to help you.

You should always ensure that your bulldog has fresh water down to prevent them from becoming dehydrated and if you’re switching between food types this should be done gradually to avoid stomach upset.

Ensure that your bulldog’s food bowl isn’t too high up, – since bulldogs have a shorter muzzle, they may struggle to eat if they have to raise their head up high.

Setting it lower down makes it easier for them to swallow their food.

What Human Foods Can French Bulldogs Eat?

It’s always nice to treat your pet and give them some of the food we’re eating, but if we’re not educated giving them human food can prove to make them very ill, or even be fatal.

Certain human foods that bulldogs CAN eat are:

1. Meats
2. White and Brown Rice (cooked)
3. Dairy Products (in small quantities, and as long as your dog isn’t lactose intolerant)
4. Fish
5. Some Vegetables – carrots, peas, broccoli and sweetcorn
6. Some Fruits – bananas, blueberries and deseeded watermelons
7. Natural and unsweetened Peanut Butter

Bulldog’s have a sensitive digestive system and just as there are foods that they can eat, there are also foods that they can’t:

1. Chocolate
2. Bacon
3. Raw Bread Dough
4. Some Fruits – Grapes, Avocados, Cherries, Tomatoes and Apple Cores
5. Some Vegetables – Mushrooms, Onions and Asparagus
6. Macadamia Nuts

If you’re unsure about feeding a certain food to your dog, it’s best to do plenty of research beforehand, or ask your vet.

It also comes with 4 strings that allow you to attach the mat to furniture, so there’s no way that a clever dog can overturn the mat to get the treats; they’ll have to use their instincts to sniff them out instead!

If your dog is on a special diet, it’s a way to encourage them to eat healthier treats such as raw carrots. It’s more exciting for them to find food that they may possibly turn their nose up at if it were just handed to them.

There are four buckles on the underside of the mat to fold and store the mat away neatly, also meaning that it’s easy to transport.

It could be a great way to keep your dog happy if you are going away for the weekend and need someone else to look after your pet.

If this is a dealbreaker for you, and if you’re looking for a simpler snuffle mat without the added squeak toys and rustling fabric then this snuffle mat by SAMMIU may be a better option.

It still encourages your pet’s natural foraging instincts but avoids any distractions. It has an anti-slip bottom silicone mat on the back and is made out of soft fabric that won’t irritate your pet’s face.

It can really help slow down your dog’s eating habits to avoid them making themselves ill and as it’s so simple, it can be used for any pet – from dogs to guinea pigs!

I’ve found that it’s a great way to distract my dog whilst I nip out to the shops, or to meet up with friends as it keeps him occupied for long enough for me to slip out and when he’s done, he just goes right to sleep on top of the mat.

It has a non-slip mat attached underneath the fabric and is made to last. It rolls up for easy storage.

Dogs aren’t the only ones that can benefit from using a snuffle mat; cats can be mentally stimulated by sniffing out treats too!

The holes in the mat have snap fastenings that are adjustable and can be used to create tunnels of various shapes and sizes, perfect to hide treats and toys in for them to find and encourage their natural foraging skills.

Cats love to be in confined spaces as it makes them feel safe and warm, so this training mat is a great way of creating that environment for them.

A great tip for using this is to stick a cardboard box through one of the holes for some structure and attach an interactive toy, such as a feather on a stick or a catnip toy for them to play with – they’ll be entertained for hours!

How To Make A DIY Snuffle Mat

There can be many reasons why a DIY snuffle mat may be of better use for you than one you can buy.

Perhaps you want to match a certain colour scheme in your home, maybe you want to make a bespoke one for your pet’s birthday or it could be that your dog has allergies and needs certain materials.

Either way, you’ll be pleased to know that making a pet snuffle mat isn’t as hard as it may seem – and is actually rather cost effective!

What You’ll Need:

• Felt fabric sheets (available from Amazon or craft stores), a cosy jumper or even your dog’s favourite blanket! (if you’re okay with cutting it up).
  
  Using something that they already have an attachment to can be a great way of encouraging them to use the mat as they’ll recognise the scent.
  
• A rubber mat with holes, such as a non-slip shower mat or an outdoor door mat. The size of the mat you use should be dependant on the size of the dog (or cat) that you’re making the mat for.
  
• Some sharp scissors

Making the DIY Snuffle Mat:

If you’re more of a visual learner, this video by Dogs Trust shows you how to make your own DIY snuffle mat.

Otherwise, I’ve written the instructions below.

1. Use the scissors to cut the felt (or whatever material you chose) into strips of about 6 inches long and 1 inch wide, or thereabouts.
   
   You don’t have to be precise with these measurements and having strips of a variety of different lengths and widths can actually make the mat more entertaining for your pet when it comes to searching for their treats.
   
   It’s hard to say exactly how many fabric strips you’ll need as it depends on the size of the mat you’ve gone for, but be prepared to cut at least a couple of hundred!

2. Take a strip of fabric and loop one end through one of the holes in the mat, take the other end of the fabric and loop it through the hole next to the one you looped the first end through.
   
   Turn the mat over and tie each end together into a knot. Make sure that the strands of fabric are coming through on the top side of the mat as this is where you’ll hide the treats.
   
   The longer the strips of fabric, the longer it’ll take for your dog to find them!

3. Take a second strip of fabric and push it through the second hole in the mat, alongside the strip that is already there.
   
   Thread the other end of this strip through the third hole, turn the mat over and tie in a knot. Keep doing this until the whole mat is covered in strips. This will take a while!

Now you can teach your dog or cat how to use the mat.

I’ve found that the best way to teach a dog to use a snuffle mat, especially if they’re a young puppy, is to initially have them sit and watch you drop a few treats into the mat without hiding them, and let them find them.

Once they’ve done this, order them to sit and wait whilst you load the mat with treats once more, this time hiding them under and between the strands of fabric as well as in the knots.

Once you’re ready, let them search for the treats using their instincts and reward them with praise once they’ve found them all.
