5 Best Long Slot (Long Slice) Toasters In The UK

Long slot toasters are great if you’ve got a big family and need to toast multiple slices of bread at the same time, or in my case – if you prefer artisan loaf slices that won’t fit in a normal toaster!

Forget those annoying (and possibly dangerous) mornings involving sticking a knife in the toaster and flipping the bread over so it gets toasted properly. Long slice toasters solve all that, and a lot of them have other features to make life easier (like a lever to lift the slices out without burning your fingers!)

There are plenty of options on the UK market, so I’ve listed the 5 best long slot toasters from my own shortlist and answered some commonly asked questions too.

Don’t forget to read my bit at the end on how to toast sourdough properly – you might be surprised…

Best 2 Slice Long Slot Toaster on the UK Market

Russell Hobbs Luna Long Slot

This long slot toaster by Russell Hobbs is made of both stainless steel and copper, inspired by the colours of a lunar eclipse (hence the name).

This is better for couples or single folk as it has 1 extra long toaster slot that will fit a variety of bread sizes and shapes, or two ‘normal’ loaf slices.

One of my favourite things about this particular toaster is that it allows you to check on the progress of your toast without having to cancel the toasting cycle with the ‘lift and look’ feature, simply lift the lever to check on how it’s doing, then push it back down to carry on toasting it.

This toaster has 55% faster-toasting technology which is ideal if you’re always in a rush in the morning – as I often am – and need a quick something to eat before you head out.

It also has an adjustable browning control so you can ensure your toast is done the way you like it. It also has reheat, defrost and cancel functions, along with a removable crumb tray that captures any loose crumbs and allows you to throw them straight into the bin.

Plenty of reviewers have said that not only does this toaster look amazing, but it toasts all sorts of bread consistently and evenly. If you don’t need one of the bigger models with multiple slots, this is a great choice.

Pros:

  • Lift and look feature
  • 55% faster toasting technology
  • Removable crumb tray
  • Reheat, defrost and cancel functions
  • Plenty of great reviews

Cons:

  • The long toaster version only comes in the one colour (copper and stainless steel)
  • Only one toaster slot, this will fit 2 slices of normal bread in however if you’re toasting boule shaped bread, it may need to be done one slice at a time

Best 4 Slice Long Slot Toaster in the UK

IKICH Extra Wide Toaster

I had never heard of IKICH before, but a friend got one of these as a wedding present and I was instantly jealous (I’d already bought the Russell Hobbs above).

Besides having two long slots, This extra wide toaster by IKICH has 6 toasting functions and the usual defrost, reheat and cancel options too.

It also has a warming rack for pastries – yes please – and a high lift function to lift out the bread safely and easily, as well as a removable crumb tray for easy cleaning.

It has 2 colour options, Classic Silver and Sesame Black so no matter your kitchen colour, the toaster will probably match.

The manufacturer has thought of some nice touches here, like anti-slip feet to make sure it stays where you want it to, along with internal cord storage that allows you to wrap up the power cord and keep your work surface neat and tidy.

People writing in reviews said that it is one of the only toasters they’ve used that can actually fit a slice of bakery or home baked bread as well as being wide enough to toast bagels too!

Pros:

  • Variable width toasting slots with room for 4 slices of bread
  • Defrost , reheat and cancel options
  • Warming rack
  • High lift function
  • Removable crumb tray
  • 2 colour options
  • Anti slip feet
  • Internal cord storage

Cons:

  • It isn’t deep enough to toast a larger slice of bread

Best Extra Long, Extra Wide Long Slot Toaster

Aigostar 4-Slice Long Slot Toaster

This long slot toaster by Aigostar comes in a silver colour and has 2 extra long slots that allows for 4 slices of square bread or 2 slices of rounded bread or pittas, which is perfect for big families who all like a bit of toast in the morning!

It has 7 browning functions which allow bread to be lightly toasted all the way to super crunchy. It also has a removable crumb drawer that easily slides out for cleaning as well as reheat, defrost and cancel functions.

IT’s also multi-function becayse this particular model has a built in warming rack which pops up over the long slot by pushing down the lever on the left – this allows you to heat up pastries, such as croissants or even bagels.

The lift up function allows you to lift up the toast when it’s done to prevent you from burning your fingers trying to pull it out.

One reviewer said that it’s really easy to use, clean and can fit 4 slices of bread in and they all toast evenly, with another saying that they get perfect toast every time.

Pros:

  • 2 extra long slots
  • 7 browning functions
  • Removable crumb drawer
  • Warming rack to heat up pastries
  • Lift up function to help removing toast easier
  • Good reviews

Cons:

  • One colour option
  • Quite a large and heavy toaster (44.5 x 21.5 x 21cm, weighing 2kg) so may not be suitable for those with smaller kitchens as it’ll take up a lot of space on the side

Best Reviewed Long Slot Toaster

Kenwood True 4-Slice Toaster in White

If you’re someone who wants a trusted brand with good reviews, then this toaster by Kenwood has 2 long slots, enough room for 4 slices, and is well regarded in all the reviews I’ve read so far.

It has a simple design, made from a white plastic – for some reason it’s really hard to get pale coloured toasters so if this matches your kitchen, then great – though it also comes as part of a set.

It has adjustable browning settings along with reheat, defrost and cancel functions. It has illuminated controls that may help those who have vision problems to distinguish the buttons from the rest of the toaster.

It has a lift up function to help with removing the toast as well as a ‘peek and view’ function that allows you to check on the progress of your toast without having to cancel the cycle – everything you need from a toaster.

Lots of good reviews here, with one person even saying that the slots are long enough to toast a baguette that’s been cut in half! Someone else said that it toasts evenly and the added peek and view function is a great addition for toasting things such as bagels, when you don’t want it to be too toasted.

Pros:

  • 2 long slots
  • reheat , defrost and cancel functions
  • Removable crumb tray
  • Illuminated controls
  • Peek and view function
  • Plenty of great reviews saying how reliable it is

Cons:

  • Only comes in white and is made of plastic, so may not suit all kitchens

How To Toast Sourdough Bread: My Tips

Sourdough bread is one of those bread types that are delicious, but can be tricky to toast in a ‘normal’ toaster with the crusts often burning before the middle of the bread has even warmed.

Obviously its better to use a long or wide toaster such as the ones mentioned above, where the slots are wide enough to accommodate boule loaves.

It’s best to toast your sourdough on a lower setting and pop it down again if need be, rather than putting it straight on a high setting and burning it.

Toasters such as the Russell Hobbs Luna and the Kenwood True are great for toasting sourdough breads as they allow you to check on the progress of your toast, without cancelling the cycle.

As well as using a toaster, Sourdough can also be toasted under the grill! Simply turn on your grill and allow it to heat up for a few minutes, then place in your slices of bread, either on a baking tray or straight on to the grill, and allow it to toast for a minute or two, before turning the bread over and grilling on the other side.

Remember to keep the oven door open and keep checking on your toast, as bread can toast really quickly under the grill and if you’re not careful, you can burn it in the blink of an eye!

The final method of toasting sourdough is in a pan on the stove. All you have to do is heat up your pan on a medium heat, pop your slice of bread in a dry, non-stick pan and toast for a minute and a half on each side, or until golden and crisp.

If you want a really even and crunchy toasting, try putting some weight on top of the slice of bread as it toasts, either by holding down the spatula on top or placing a heavy object on top, such as a bottle of ketchup.

The added weight will ensure the surface of the toast is toasted evenly and gives you that extra crunch – yum!

After reading this article, I hope you’ve found all the information that you’re looking for – there’s nothing quite like a BIG slice of warm, buttered toast in the morning!
