Although we have many great sweets and chocolate bars available from around the world in the UK, there are still many that haven’t made their way over to us. America is known worldwide for its wide variety of candies and sweets that are only available in America.

In the UK, we now have specialist American Candy shops and websites that import certain candies, but they often come at a higher price point. Some candies mentioned on this list may be available at these stores, but they are not widely available.

So, whether you’re headed on holiday to the States or are just curious as to what’s available in America, read this blog post for 15 candies and sweets that aren’t widely available in the UK!

Baby Ruth Bars

Despite being a favourite candy in America since the 1920s, Baby Ruth bars have never made it over international waters. The bar itself is made of peanuts, caramel and milk chocolate flavoured nougat, covered in milk chocolate.

If you’re wondering what to compare it to over here in the UK, the most similar chocolate bar is probably Snickers. Both are made of very similar ingredients, but the nougat featured in a Baby Ruth does not contain any peanuts.

Flavoured M&Ms

We have M&Ms over here in the UK, including milk chocolate, peanut, crunchy and salted caramel. But, that’s nothing compared to the flavours they have in America!

Walking into your typical supermarket, you’ll be overwhelmed with the amount of different M&Ms on offer. Without being able to count every single flavour in store, it seems that they have around 50 flavours throughout the year including Christmas, Halloween and Easter limited editions.

American flavours include:

Peanut butter

Almond

Dark Chocolate

Mint

Fudge Brownie

Birthday Cake

Coconut

And that’s just naming a few! Whatever flavour you can imagine, you’ll be more than likely to find it over in America. Unfortunately, there isn’t really an equivalent for many of these flavours in the UK. But, searching some specialist American candy stores may help you find a few flavours.

Peeps

Peeps are a seasonal staple in America, popular around Easter and other holidays. Peeps are coloured marshmallows, shaped into bunnies, chicks and other animals and shapes depending on the season.

They are made from sugar, corn syrup, food dyes and a pinch of salt. Not only do they come in different colours, but different flavours too. These flavours include cotton candy, gingerbread, lemon delight, candy cane and chocolate covered!

Original Peeps are very difficult to find in the UK, and unfortunately we don’t have an alternative to them in the UK.

Grape Flavoured Candy

Grape is a popular flavour in America when it comes to sweets and candies, however we don’t tend to have grape flavour over here.

In America, they have a different variety of grape known as the Concord grape that is used to make grape jams, juices and sweets. Over here, our purple coloured sweets and drinks are usually blackcurrant, a flavour that they don’t have in America.

In America, grape flavoured sweets include skittles, jolly ranchers, airheads (known as grapeheads) and sour patch kids. They even have grape flavoured fanta, kool aid and jams. They taste nothing like the grapes we have in the UK, so if you’re interested in trying a new flavour in America, pick up something grape!

Junior Mints

Junior Mints were created in 1949 and have been popular in America ever since. They consist of a creamy, fondant mint filling in a dark chocolate coating and are small and round in shape.

Although not available in the UK, a chocolate over here that is similar in flavour is an After Eight. Though they’re both entirely different shapes, they have practically the same ingredients.

Candy Corn

Halloween without Candy Corn in America is almost unheard of! Candy Corn are made to look like pieces of sweetcorn, they’re a multicoloured pyramid shape with yellow, orange and white representing the colour of fall harvest.

Their flavour is based on vanilla, honey sugar and butter making them a delicious sweet treat, with a soft and chewy flavour.

Americans are divided over the flavour, with people either loving Candy Corn or hating it, much like Marmite! We’d recommend giving it a go on your next trip to America to see what the fuss is all about.

Charleston Chew

A staple chocolate bar over in America, a Charleston Chew is flavoured nougat covered in a milk chocolate coating. These candy bars have been around for decades and now come in three different flavours, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.

A popular trick over the years has been to put a Charleston Chew in the freezer for a few hours. Then, once they’ve frozen, smack them against a surface to create multiple, bite-sized pieces.

100-Grand Bars

Originally called the $100,000 Bar, this chocolate bar was created in the 1960s by Nestlé. It is made of caramel with chocolate and crisped rice coating. The most similar chocolate bar that we have over here in the UK that I can think of would be the Toffee Crisp, although they still have their differences!

Hershey’s Kisses

Although many Hershey’s bars are now available in UK supermarkets, including milk chocolate and cookies and creme, Hershey’s kisses are not as easy to find. In America, Hershey’s kisses are popular around Valentine’s Day due to their sweet name.

They’re also popular around the rest of the year, with Hershey’s producing around 70 million kisses a day! The chocolate itself is just individually wrapped milk chocolate, but they are shaped like little teardrops.

The chocolate is so popular there is now Hershey’s Kisses flavoured cereal, that you may find hiding down an international aisle in your local supermarket.

Sugar Daddy

Sugar Daddies are essentially a block of chewy caramel, on a lollipop stick. They are produced by confectionary brand Tootsie Roll industry, which specialises in caramel flavoured treats.

As well as Sugar Daddies, Sugar Babies are available as a companion to the caramel pop. Sugar Babies, also not available in the UK, are bite-sized caramel sweets covered in a layer of milk chocolate. We have no alternative to the Sugar Daddy in the UK, but Sugar Babies are similar to the caramel flavoured chocolate you get in a pack of Revels!

Butterfinger

Butterfingers are popular in America and have been since they were created in the 1920s.

You’d think they’d be flavoured like butter due to their name, but they are actually made of a layered, crisp peanut butter core covered in milk chocolate. Butterfingers also come in two smaller, snack sized chunks called Butterfinger Bites Snackerz, which are essentially just mini versions of the full size bar.

Butterfinger Snackerz have smoother peanut butter layer when compared to Bites and the original bar.

3 Musketeers

3 Musketeers is a chocolate bar made by Mars, Incorporated. It is made of aerated, whipped mousse covered in milk chocolate. It’s relatively similar to a Milky Way bar that we get over here!

Originally, the bar featured 3 flavours, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, but due to rising costs during the war they opted to sell a larger version of the most popular chocolate flavour.

Nowadays, they introduce and phase out limited edition flavours regularly. These flavours have included Hot Cocoa, Strawberry, Mint, Birthday Cake and Marshmallow.

Dum Dums

Dum Dums are American lollipops that were introduced in 1924 and have been popular ever since. Obviously, we have lots of hard lollipops over here in the UK, but Dum Dums offer so many flavours that are simply not seen on our shelves!

These flavours include:

Blue Raspberry

Bubblegum

Butterscotch

Cotton Candy

Cherry

Cream Soda

Grape

Fruit Punch

Root Beer

Watermelon

Strawberry

And that’s just naming a few! They come in multipacks and single flavours, meaning once you’ve found a favourite you can stick to it!

Warheads

Another hard candy only available in America, Warheads are individually wrapped, extremely sour sweets. They’re on the same level of sourness as a freshly cut lemon! The candy itself is a sweet, lemony flavour with a sour powder on the outside.

Although Warheads aren’t available here, the closest match would be Toxic Waste, which is ironically also an American candy!

Fruit Gushers

They also have a spicy version, known as fiery! Definitely a must try if you’re heading over to the States any time soon.

After reading this blog post, I hope that you’ve found some new candies and sweets to try on your next trip over! Make sure to leave space in your luggage for all the treats you’re bound to pick up.

Even though I call myself a foodie, I’ll occasionally get a weakness for some Maccy D’s. Although they satisfy your needs most of the time, there are times when poor servers, bad food, or a variety of other problems can ruin your dining experience.

In this case, it’s a good idea to give constructive feedback and complain about the issue, so the restaurant improves. It wasn’t until I had to complain to McDonalds that I realised there were more ways to go about it than I thought.

To complain to McDonald’s in the UK, you can use social media, the phone, email and also speak to a manager in person. The customer service department is trained to handle most of your complaints and is the best avenue to ensure your complaint is addressed.

No one likes a bad experience, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Keep reading to find out how to make a complaint to McDonald’s in the UK and improve your dining experience.

Ways To Lodge a Complaint With McDonald’s in the UK

There are multiple ways to lodge a complaint with McDonald’s in the UK. No method is necessarily better than the others, but one might work better for you depending on your preference, who’s handling your complaint, and the number of people who are also making a complaint via the avenue you’re using.

Talk To a Manager

When you have a complaint while physically inside a McDonald’s, asking for a manager can be far quicker than using customer service.

If your complaint is a question or a problem with your experience in that McDonald’s UK branch, the manager will usually be able to solve it. They’ve usually got the authority to correct something that’s wrong – there and then.

Call Customer Service

If a manager cannot solve your problem, the best way to get the response you want is to call McDonald’s UK Customer service at +44 370 524 4622. Depending on the time of day, you may need to wait on the phone for a while due to long queues.

Note that you can only call the customer service number at specific times. During the week, the number is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On the weekends, the window to call is shorter, lasting only 6 hours from 10 AM to 4 PM. (Source: GetCustomerService)

Send an Email

If you’d rather outline your problems in a well-thought-out email, you can also make a complaint by emailing customerservices@mcDonalds.co.uk. The team will usually get back to you within a day. To make the process quicker, provide all the details related to your problems, such as relevant dates, addresses, and receipts.

Reach Out on Social Media

If you’re more comfortable communicating with customer service via social media, you can make your complaint to the McDonald’s UK Twitter account.

If the account manager isn’t active, however, it can sometimes take a few hours to get a response. A barrage of complaints from other Twitter users can also prolong your waiting time. (Source: McDonald’s UK Twitter).

I’ve never tried to message them through Facebook though I’m sure that works just as well.

Use the McDonald’s UK Virtual Assistant

One less popular choice is to use the virtual assistant on the company’s website. Although you won’t get exact answers to all your questions, the virtual assistant is pre-programmed with solutions to many basic problems. (Source: McDonald’s UK)

If the assistant cannot completely help you, you can file a complaint in the virtual assistant window. Regardless of the method you choose, always remember to keep details of your problem handy. Any dates or receipts will go a long way.

Can I Complain to the McDonald’s UK Head Office?

You cannot complain to the McDonald’s UK head office directly. To make complaints, you have to go through one of the official channels (i.e., social media, email, and phone) to communicate with the company’s customer service department.

But if you must know, the McDonald’s UK head office is located at 11-59 High Rd, East Finchley, London N2. Bear in mind that writing to this address might not be the best first port of call – use the other ways listed above first.

The McDonald’s Complaint Procedure in the UK

So what happens when you actually make a complaint?

The McDonald’s complaint procedure in the UK is as follows:

Contact McDonald’s customer service through mobile, email, or social media.

Explain your complaint in detail. Include important information such as the address of the McDonald’s branch, the problem, date, and receipt.

Wait for your problem to be sorted by customer service. This could take a couple of minutes (in branch) or a few days or weeks, depending on how you contact them and how serious your complaint is.

The McDonald’s UK complaint procedure is straightforward and usually only requires you to reach out once before your problem is acknowledged and addressed. That said, the process might be more or less convenient depending on how you choose to make your complaint.

For example, you can usually expect to wait on the phone for a long time due to the high volume of calls. On the other hand, while you might skip the long queues by using social media, you will have to wait for the handler to respond to your message.

Overall, I hope this helps if you find yourself wondering how to complain to McDonald’s in the UK. Most other websites only tell you how to complain in the US, so I hope you find this British-centric guide useful!

Making your own pizza at home is a great idea! Not only is it healthier for you and cheaper than ordering a takeaway, but it’s fun, too. Choosing your toppings and creating delicious pizza together, then sitting down and eating is a lovely activity to do with little ones as well.

To create a perfect pizza at home, you need the right accessories. This includes a quality pizza peel. It’s no good making a superb pizza, only to have it stick to the peel (or even worse, fall on the floor – as as happened to me too many times).

Here are the ones we shortlisted when looking for a decent pizza peel in the UK:

Best for Pizza Ovens: Argon Tableware Aluminium Pizza Peel

This 12×14 inch Aluminium Pizza Peel by Argon Tableware is square in shape, so it’s suitable for pizzas of all sizes. The smooth aluminium blade features a sleek design that makes it easy to slide it underneath pizzas, so you don’t have to worry about struggling to lift it.

It features a long wooden handle that is naturally heat resistant, which keeps your hands and fingers away from the heat and any potential burns. If you’re not used to handling a peel, this is a big plus. One reviewer said that they thought the peel was well made and it worked very well. They also confirmed that it keeps your hands well away from the heat!

The peel is lightweight and stable, so there’s no risk of dropping your meal due to an unbalanced peel. However, ensure that you have sufficient space to store this pizza peel as it’s unlikely to fit in a kitchen cupboard, which could lead to clutter in your kitchen…

Pros:

Tips On How To Use A Pizza Peel

I’d be lying if I said that using a pizza peel doesn’t take some getting used to. It certainly takes some practice before you get the hang of it. Hopefully, these tips will make it slightly easier to master.

Before use, ensure that your pizza peel is clean and completely dry. Any moisture on the pizza peel can make your dough stick.

Stretch your raw pizza dough out on your worktop to the size you want it. Dust the pizza peel with plenty of flour or semolina and place the dough on top. Then, add your sauce and toppings. Make sure not to get any sauce on the peel as the moisture will make the dough stick!

As you’re adding your toppings, give the peel a shake every now and then to make sure that the dough hasn’t stuck. Add extra flour and semolina if needed.

Open your oven and pull out the rack that holds your pizza stone. Drop your pizza on the stone. Don’t shake or tilt the peel as this will catch the edge of the dough on the pizza stone and lead to an uneven pizza crust. Use a confident quick back and forth movement with your wrist for the best results. This is the hardest part to master so don’t panic if you don’t get it right straight away!

To retrieve your pizza, firmly slide the peel underneath and make sure to keep it flat. Transfer your pizza to your worktop.

The best tip I can give is to be confident when using a pizza peel. If you overthink it too much, you’re likely to get unsteady hands and mess it up. It definitely takes some practice to master, but that means more pizza!

How To Stop A Pizza Sticking To A Pizza Peel

The easiest way to ensure your uncooked pizza dough doesn’t stick to the peel is to make sure that the peel or base of the pizza is dusted with plenty of flour, semolina or cornmeal. This will absorb any moisture from the dough and make it easier to slide on and off.

If you’re gluten-free, the dough you use can be stickier due to the different flour used. To combat this, you can opt for baking or parchment paper underneath the dough instead. This is fine to go into the pizza oven until the base has crisped up, then slide it out before the pizza finishes cooking entirely.

Some places recommend oiling your wooden pizza peel to prevent warping. I don’t recommend this, it’s often seen as an unnecessary step and can actually increase the risk of the uncooked dough sticking if it is not cleaned off properly.

I used to live about ten miles from Morecambe and often went there to sit on the rocks and look at the sea, the home of the famous Morecambe Bay brown shrimp, which are made into the traditional potted shrimp.

For some daft reason, I didn’t eat many of them, but I do now! They’re absolutely delicious, yet in danger of being forgotten. I’m happy to report that there are a number of places you can buy them these days – even if you’re nowhere near Morecambe.

Where to Buy Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps in the UK

Here’s a list of the best places to buy Morecambe potted shrimp – or, if you’re making your own – where to buy the authentic, traditional British brown shrimp that most recipes call for, too.

Please note that these aren’t prawns – they’re totally different, sweeter, and more succulent. Do try them!

1. The Fish Society

The Fish Society is first on my list because they sell both the raw product (the brown shrimp) AND the traditional potted version.

Their potted shrimp is made by an artisan producer in Morecambe, and they recently switched up their recipe to include a bit more butter – which, they say, made everyone very happy. Their potted shrimps have excellent reviews, and they include a cracking recipe idea – tipping the whole lot over a hot jacket potato. Yes please!

If you’re going to make potted shrimp yourself, you can buy real brown shrimp (crangon crangon is the cute Latin name) from the Fish Society too, either peeled or whole.

Lovers of the potted version will be pleased to learn that there’s a “multibuy” deal so if you stock up on a few, the price goes down.

The Fish Society has a huge selection of other fish-related products so it’s very easy to get up to their minimum/free delivery threshold, too. I recommend them in my best British fishmongers article for this reason.

2. Fine Food Specialist

As you’d expect from the name, Fine Food Specialist only stocks the best versions of many luxury products. They are already in my top 10 online butchers for their quality meat, and their supplier of potted shrimps is no different.

You can only buy a multipack of 4 pots from them, which isn’t really a big deal if you’re making it worth your while for delivery. Plus they’re frozen, so you don’t have to use them up all at once.

Their potted shrimps are caught and cooked the traditional way – on board the boat, in seawater. This is the authentic method, and becoming increasingly hard to find since the number of boats fishing for the shrimp is in decline.

Buying from Fine Food Specialist is therefore a good way to support a small producer, still sticking to the older methods. It means their potted shrimp are delicious too – there’s a tiny bit of cayenne in their recipe and it makes all the difference.

Fun Fact: Forget Martinis and Bollinger – James Bond also loved Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimp. As did his creator, Ian Fleming.

Supermarkets (Waitrose and Booths in Particular)

If I run out of potted shrimp I’ve often thrown some in with the regular shop. Waitrose is fairly consistent in stocking the “Marine Gourmet” brand, which has been around forever – you’ll probably recognise the distinctive blue and white pot.

If you’re further North, Booths are also a reliable supermarket for potted shrimps and stock some local producers such as Furness Fish – who also run Morecambe Bay Shrimps, listed below.

I’ve noticed some potted shrimps in other supermarkets like Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, but these tend to be the larger stores.

James Baxter and Son

Baxters “original potted shrimps” have the Royal Warrant, so if it’s good enough for the Queen, you know that these are high quality from the oldest supplier in the country. Before that, they were the Queen Mother’s choice, too.

The company go back all the way to 1799 and the seventh generation are still running the company. If you want tradition, then this is it! They also have a small selection of game and frozen, fish too.

There are MANY quantity options here – and at reasonable prices, too. If you already know you love potted shrimps and you want to stock up, you can get quantity and quality here – a rare thing.

Shipping is on the pricier side compared to some other suppliers (I paid just under a tenner for a pack of 6 single portions) but with such a delicate product, it’s probably a good idea to pay a bit more knowing it will arrive in good condition.

Fun Fact: A year’s supply of Potted Shrimp is the prize for the “Hatchet Job of the Year” among the UK press.

Morecambe Bay Shrimps (Furness Fish)

Morecambe Bay Shrimps – as you can tell from the name – have been doing this a long time. They are one of the biggest producers of traditional potted shrimp, and have larger quantities fit for dinner parties and large gatherings, if that’s what you’re after instead of the individual little pots.

They also sell peeled brown shrimps for you to make your own at home, too. Delivery is four days a week (Tues-Fri) and to most places in the UK, except the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

How Do You Eat or Serve Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps?

The traditional way to serve and eat potted shrimps are on crusty bread or toast. It’s best to let the butter get to room temperature to make it easily spreadable. Alternatively, I recommend you warm the pot through a little bit in the oven at a low temperature, to help soften the butter.

I like mine piled on a slice of sourdough with a green salad on the side:

What’s the Shelf Life of Potted Shrimps? Do They Keep Well?

Potted shrimps can keep for up to three months or more when in the freezer. When in the fridge, they keep longer than you might expect because the butter preserves them – depending on the producer, the shelf life is given as 10 – 12 days.

For the best taste, eat your potted shrimps (when defrosted) by the date given on the pot. This is usually at least a week from when you buy them.

Can You Freeze Potted Shrimps?

You can freeze potted shrimps for up to three months, according to most producers. Very often, ones you’ll find in supermarkets have been previously frozen. This doesn’t impair the quality – they’ll still be delicious. The butter acts as a preservative, as with other “potted” products.

Why Are Potted Shrimps so Expensive?

Some people are surprised that a tiny pot of seafood can average about a fiver. You only have to look at the work that goes into making a little pot of brown shrimps to know why they can be expensive (considering their size!)

Potted Shrimps are expensive because catching and preparing them in the traditional way is a labour-intensive process. There are the running costs of the boat itself, and the equipment needed to boil and peel the fresh shrimp on board. Additionally, the traditional recipe calls for quality butter, which isn’t cheap either.

Some companies now use tractors to harvest the shrimp at low water, but these aren’t cheap to run, either!

Considering the amount of fiddly work that goes into this quality product, and the taste at the end, I think they’re well worth it.

If you’re an avid sushi lover but don’t enjoy paying the high restaurant prices for your favourite roll, you may be wondering how you can make sushi at home. But, where’s the best place to buy a fresh cut of fish, and is it even possible to buy sushi-grade fish in the UK?

You can buy sushi-grade fish in the UK from reputable fishmongers. Although some supermarket fish is suitable for sushi, you’ll need to ensure it’s been prepared and stored correctly before purchasing. Most of the time, it’s much safer to buy your sushi fish directly from a specialist fishmonger.

In this article, I’ll explore what sushi-grade fish is and if it’s safe to purchase at your local supermarket. I’ll also recommend the best places to buy raw fish that’s ideal for making sushi. Keep reading to learn more.

Where To Get Sushi Grade Fish in the UK

You can purchase sushi-grade fish in the UK from several fish specialists or at your local supermarket. However, the fish specialists will offer the highest standard of quality and ensure the fish is safe to consume raw.

For the best sushi-grade fish in the UK, I enjoy ordering from The Fish Society. This shop offers tasty cuts of safely-prepared salmon backs and tuna that you can use to create nigiri and sashimi.

Salmon backs are great for creating fine slices of sashimi because they’re much wider and slightly thinner than filets, making them easy to pick up with your chopsticks.

On the other hand, the tuna blocks are cut into thicker chunks that allow you to trim them down to the desired size. You can slice them thinly and easily layer them on your rice logs, creating the perfect nigiri, or you can grate them into slivers to roll into a spicy tuna roll.

The shop also offers fresh mackerel cut from the back or stomach, which can safely be eaten as sashimi. This cut is good for thin and even slices that you can fan out on the plate, which makes the sushi look more visually appealing as well. (It also gives off the impression that you’ve done this before – even if you’re a beginner like me!)

Source: The Fish Society

Another great place where you can get high-quality raw fish for sushi is Fine Food Specialists. What I like about this shop is the wide variety of raw fish you can get that you probably wouldn’t find in standard supermarkets, such as bluefin tuna and hiramasa.

These are pricier cuts but definitely worth a try. I particularly like the taste of the hiramasa sashimi, which has a warm, rich, and buttery flavour that goes so well with the pickled ginger – so don’t pass this one up!

Also, if you’re based in London, this shop offers same-day delivery, and is super convenient, especially if you don’t want to carry your fresh fish on the underground. If you’re located a little further out, don’t fret – this shop also offers next-day delivery!

Source: Fine Food Specialists

The last shop I’ve had a great experience with is The Fresh Fish Shop. I like this shop because, if you’re a sushi-making newbie like me, you can purchase all the ingredients in bundles to make your favourite sushi rolls. This makes it easy to get fresh fish and the right supplies.

The salmon is also perfectly cut (straight from the fish’s side), so you can slice it into smaller pieces for sashimi, use it as strips on nigiri, or chop it finer to fit into maki rolls. Any leftover raw salmon strips can be used to make yummy temakis too.

When I ordered my salmon, I asked the fishmonger to remove the skin. This made it really easy to handle the salmon cuts when I was making sushi and I was able to get more defined pieces for my rolls.

Do UK Supermarkets Sell Sushi Grade Fish?

You may be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as “sushi grade fish” in the UK. The government doesn’t have regulations detailing what constitutes sushi-grade fish but instead regulates how fish must be stored, cleaned, and sold to be safe for consumption.

According to the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA), salmon is prone to parasite worms if they aren’t cleaned and stored correctly. For these reasons, the government indicates that salmon must be thoroughly checked, sanitised, and frozen before selling.

Another alternative to treating wild fish from parasites is to use a heating method that kills the worms and lowers the risk of illness.

However, according to the same source, you may be able to eat Scottish salmon raw because it’s been farmed, rather than caught in the wild. This is because salmon that’s been farmed usually has a lower risk of parasites.

UK supermarkets do sell fish that is safe for sushi. However, you’ll need to ask the fish-seller at the counter where the fish was sourced and if it was frozen or temperature-treated beforehand.

If the fish-seller can’t confirm this information, you shouldn’t consume the fish raw.

Can I Use UK Supermarket Fish for Sushi?

You can use UK supermarket fish for sushi if the fish was previously frozen or is of high quality and cleaned correctly. You should not make sushi with supermarket fish if it hasn’t been treated or if the fish appears spoiled.

According to The Fish Society, there are a few ways to tell if fish has spoiled or isn’t suitable for raw consumption:

It has bruises.

It has grey, brown, or black discolouration.

It has blemishes.

If you do decide to get fresh raw fish from your local supermarkets, such as Asda, Morrison’s, or Tesco, you should carry out a few checks first, to ensure quality. Refrain from purchasing any fish from the counter if the fish-seller doesn’t have information about where it was sourced, how it’s been cut, or how it was treated.

You can further assess a fish’s quality based on how it’s being stored and displayed. For example, check if there is enough ice surrounding the entire fish, or if the ice bed seems drained and neglected. Check if the fish is labelled correctly and if it’s touching other varieties of fish. You should also look out for any flies or bugs on the fish.

These can all be signs that the fish may not be suitable for raw consumption.

So, while you can get decent-quality fish from the supermarket, you may be better off paying a little extra and going to a high-end supermarket, such as Waitrose or Marks & Spencers, or a fish specialist. These shops charge higher premiums to ensure better quality, but it’s definitely worth the price to avoid getting sick.

The fishmongers even go the extra mile by giving you a selection of fishes suitable specifically for making sushi. And when you’re trying to make that perfect piece of sushi, you won’t regret paying those few extra pounds!

After going through this article, I hope you can find some helpful information on the type of fish you can safely use for your sushi craving. When in doubt, always purchase your sushi fish from a professional fishmonger or specialist for ensured safety and quality.

Like many food-conscious people I’m increasing the number of vegan meals I eat. Not only to try to reduce the meat in my diet, but to embrace healthier, more ethical

Like many food-conscious people I’m increasing the number of vegan meals I eat. Not only to try to reduce the meat in my diet, but to embrace healthier, more ethical food options. There are loads of creative and tasty vegan options to be had in the UK, even if you’re usually a meat-eater.

After loads of research I’ve made a comprehensive list of the best places for buying vegan food online in the UK, including many shops and vegan supermarkets offering home delivery. In no particular order, here are some great places to buy vegan food online in the UK:

1. Greenbay

Greenbay is a supermarket where 100% (yes, everything) is vegan. No checking labels, no reading ingredients. If they sell it, it’s vegan. It’s run by vegans as well, so if you’re after certain items or want to try new things, you can always ask their knowledgeable staff.

They’re particularly good at ‘hard to find’ items and have a few vegan products that are exclusive to them.

The variety they stock is impressive. For example, they’ve
got over 90 vegan cheeses – that’s more than most non-specialist cheesemongers.
They also have a ‘cruelty free’ health and beauty section if you want to buy
vegan products as well as vegan food.

Returning customers will be rewarded with their ‘GreenClub’
loyalty scheme. People I’ve spoken to who use Greenbay also say that they do
frequent deals and discount/promo codes as well, so it might be an idea to sign
up for their mailing list and/or offers if you plan to shop there frequently.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes – and it’s free if you spend over a certain amount. They
deliver all over the UK and some European destinations, too. If you’re in
London you can also collect your order from them for free.

2. Planet Organic

Planet Organic has been around for a long time (since 1995) and has expanded into a reliable, trusted name when it comes to organic food. Their online supermarket allows you to “shop by lifestyle”, on their homepage, so just click ‘Vegan Shop’ and you’ll be able to browse all their vegan products – over 3000 of them.

They also have a ‘Vegan Health’ section with items such as
vitamins, protein powder and probiotics. Alongside this, there’s a ‘Vegan
Beauty’ section as well, with almost a thousand different cruelty-free, ethical
beauty products.

They have a Payment and Loyalty app called YOYO, which
rewards loyalty but also gives you access to promotional offers and deals.
Joining their mailing list usually gives you a small discount code to use
straight away, too.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes – and it’s free with a minimum spend amount, available
throughout the UK. If you’re in London you can get their ‘fresh’ items and organise
delivery like you would with any other supermarket, choosing an hourly slot, or
collect your order in the store for free.

3. Ethical Superstore

Ethical Superstore is huge, and their focus is on “products that put people and the planet first”. This not only includes vegan and other food, but also ethical clothing, fashion, beauty, kids and products for the home, too.

They give you the option to shop in many different categories. For example, I really like their ‘plastic alternatives’ subsection where you can buy plastic-free products. They have a good vegan section with over a thousand items available in it.

You’ll find their vegan items under the “free from” section or under the ‘shop by ethics and tags’ link at the bottom of the site. Once you’re in the vegan section, you can easily navigate by groceries, clothing, and so on.

Ethical Superstore offers a price guarantee, which is something not commonly found in specialist shops. They promise to be the cheapest on ‘leading ethical products’ and will refund the difference on these products if you find them cheaper elsewhere.

They have a loyalty and reward scheme too, with points vouchers
sent out quarterly.

Do they do home delivery? Yes, they’re an online-only store and only deliver within the UK. They have a free delivery threshold if you spend a certain amount, with express options available.

In keeping with their ethical ethos, they’ve paid a lot of attention to their delivery infrastructure, including their carbon footprint and packaging, which is nice to know.

4. Amazon UK

Amazon has moved into the grocery and fresh food markets in a big way in the UK, and now offers thousands of food products on the site. This includes lots of vegan food and vegan products, with many items sold directly by small independent suppliers.

At the time of writing, selecting the “vegan” section in their grocery category yields over thirty thousand (yep, 30,000) product results.

Of course, some of these aren’t vegan specialisms – they’re just food products that happen to be vegan – but it certainly helps widen the breadth of choice available when choosing vegan-friendly food.

Amazon also has a “fresh” grocery shopping arm. This is similar to a normal supermarket where fresh produce and chilled products are delivered either the same or the next day, in hourly slots. It’s only being rolled out in select postcodes at the moment, particularly around London. You can click here to check if your area is covered.

It’s worth considering Amazon if you want to buy a mix of
vegan and non-vegan products – for example, if your household has mixed dietary
requirements – and still take advantage of Amazon’s free shipping if you spend
a specific amount.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes, as you would expect – it’s usually free over a certain
amount, or if you’re an Amazon Prime member.

5. Big Green Smile

Big Green Smile is based in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and specialise in natural and organic products, deliverable throughout the UK.

They have a large Vegan section that focuses mostly on ethical vegan products for skincare and beauty rather than vegan food. However, they have been included here because they sell vegan baby food, which is sometimes difficult to source. They also carry a range of vegan food supplements.

Vegan friends tell me they like Big Green Smile because of
their policy of giving you a couple of free samples with every order over a
tenner. You get to choose which samples to try, so it’s a good way of bagging a
free trial of new vegan products without having to purchase the full-size item
to see if you like it.

Do they do home delivery? Yes, they offer UK wide delivery – and it’s free over a certain amount. At the moment the free sample policy is for any order over £10. They’ll also ship to most of Europe, too.

6. RealFoods

RealFoods are a long-established Edinburgh institution who has been selling ‘real foods’ and shipping them worldwide for over forty years. They’re still going strong, and offer a wide range of vegan food products as part of their commitment to everything “natural, healthy and ethical”.

Their website is a wealth of information, including tips on how to ‘go vegan’ and numerous books and vegan recipes as well.

They do have a large vegan section which is sometimes a bit tricky to navigate to on their site. You select a subcategory first (e.g. ‘Special Offers’ or ‘Superfoods’) and then click the ‘Vegan’ checkbox under ‘Filter by Diet type’ on the left.

However, every single product is labelled with little icons showing if it’s vegan, dairy-free and so on so if you just want a browse, it’s easy to find lots of options.

One thing RealFoods specialises in is wholesale. If you want
to bulk buy vegan food then you can usually buy it here at pretty competitive
prices. They offer bulk and case discounts, too.

Do they do home delivery? Yes – with one of the lower ‘minimum spends’, not restricted by weight for normal shoppers in the UK mainland. If you’re buying wholesale vegan food, you’ll pay a small ‘unit charge’ for each item, up to 25kg(!) in weight.

Check their delivery days if you’re buying fresh food, because they only send these out on certain days depending on when their stock comes in.

7. eBay UK

When a vegan friend told me to add eBay to this list I thought: huh? As it turns out, vegans are flocking to eBay to get competitively priced vegan food direct from specialist sellers and suppliers. Apparently, it’s excellent for vegan sweets and chocolate!

eBay historically hasn’t been known much for any type of food selling, let alone vegan food, but I had a look around and sure enough, there are loads of vegan food options available to the UK market, from UK sellers.

As eBay doesn’t really have a dedicated vegan category, it
helps to know what you’re looking for first. You could just search for ‘vegan’
and see what comes up in your search results, but it’s better to be specific.
Typing “vegan sweets” for example, showed over a thousand results.

eBay is also pretty strong in the supplements and vitamin department, but as always – check the seller’s feedback before you buy. It’s very handy to read multiple reviews on whether something was good value, tasted nice, or is decent quality for the price.

As with all other eBay purchases, particularly if you pay via PayPal, you’re protected by their buyer’s protection scheme.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes, and prices vary from free postage and packing for just one
item, up to bulk deals and offers. Each seller’s listing will be different, so
check postage and packaging charges on each item, which is usually clearly
displayed.

8. VeganStore

VeganStore is a true online vegan supermarket. Everything they sell is vegan, so you can select any product on their site safe in the knowledge that it’s already been checked and certified as vegan.

What’s particularly good about VeganStore is that they source good vegan food from all over the world rather than just the UK. Very often they have been the first to market with interesting imported vegan food.

They try to use UK suppliers where possible in the spirit of keeping things local, but acknowledge that some countries (particularly the USA) have some great vegan products that UK vegans would be interested in.

They’re also particularly strong on seasonal products such
as Easter eggs, Christmas food or vegan valentine’s day items, depending on the
time of year. If there’s a particular vegan item you know about and can’t find
a stockist for, they’re also open to feedback on what to get in stock.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes, they have different flat rates depending on spend, and a
minimum spend threshold for free UK delivery, too. Next-day or express delivery
is available for an extra fee. They will also post worldwide – check their site
for country-specific delivery information.

9. Ocado

I’ve included Ocado on here because it was recommended by a couple of vegan friends. Many people have heard of Ocado: it’s an online-only supermarket that used to be closely aligned with Waitrose, but now they also stock many branded and specialist products of their own as well.

If you want to buy Waitrose vegan products and meals but don’t live near a Waitrose, Ocado may be the answer. Check on their site first if they deliver to your postcode area.

Searching for vegan food is relatively simple as there is a ‘Dietary and Lifestyle’ checkbox on the left to filter all results by diet only. This is also very handy for other filters that are often overlooked by other supermarkets and shops, such as the ability to filter out food that contains nuts, sesame or other allergens.

You can also choose food that is Fairtrade and/or organic as well as vegan.

Ocado is a good choice if you buy (or want to buy) popular brands that are vegan without having to go to several different supermarkets, and if you want your shopping delivered to your door.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes, this is all Ocado do as they don’t have physical stores.
They cover a lot of the UK and are a good option for people who want to shop at
Waitrose, but who don’t live near one of their stores.

The online-only status means that there’s no option to
collect (in which case you might want to choose Waitrose directly, below).
Delivery fees vary depending on both the spend amount and the hourly time slot
you’ve booked.

10. Holland & Barrett

Holland and Barrett are a well-established UK high street chain, known for specialising in health food and vitamins. They sometimes get overlooked as a destination for vegan food shopping, and many people don’t realise that you can order on their website, which has a much broader range of products than their individual stores.

They are particularly strong on multiple dietary
requirements. For example, if you’re a coeliac vegan who also needs to avoid
nuts, then you can select all three filters on the left-hand side of their
webpage. This takes the pain out of
reading labels and combing through hundreds of products for the allergen
information.

Because they are such a large company, they often run very
competitive promotions on popular products, including vegan supplements. They
also have other big savings when they do a ‘price drop’ or ‘buy one get one
free’ so if you buy a vegan food product regularly, there’s the potential to
make bigger savings.

They also have a loyalty point scheme that will work both in
their physical shops and on their website. It’s available via their branded
mobile app as well.

Do they do home delivery? Yes, and the prices are very competitive compared to many other online vegan supermarkets. As with many similar sites, delivery is free if you spend a minimum amount.

Because they are a high street chain, you also have the option of ‘click and collect’ either for a small fee or free over a certain amount, where you can pick up your order in any of their stores.

11. Vegusto

Vegusto is based in Switzerland, and if there’s one thing the Swiss know about, it’s cheese and meat. But don’t despair – theirs are all 100% plant-based and have a bit of a cult following. They make their products in an entirely vegan factory perched atop Lake Constance near the Swiss/German border.

Although you can buy their products in some shops, you can
get their full range online and have it delivered to you at a decent price.

One of their most popular products is in their ‘no moo’ series of cheeses. They have a huge variety, and one that is veg, dairy free and nut free as well – a ‘cheezy sauce’ for pouring over pasta or spreading on pizza.

They also make a lot of vegan sausages, burgers and sliced deli items. You could run an entire plant-based BBQ by using their range of products.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes, they do, but they only ship Mondays to Thursdays, so check
when you order. Prices vary depending on the amount spent, with free delivery
over a certain amount.

Bonus: Vegan Wines Online

Many people automatically presume that all wine is vegan.
It’s grape juice, right? Wrong. I had no idea that animal products are often
used in the fining process. One particularly weird example is isinglass
protein, which is made out of dried fish bladders.

Fortunately, there are lots of wines that aren’t processed
in this way and many wines are vegan. It’s quite difficult navigating through
different wine labels though, as wines don’t often mark themselves as vegan on
the label, even if they are.

This is slowly changing. Based in Chichester, Vegan Wines Online has found and sell over 100 wines that are definitely vegan. Their site is pretty simple, best navigated by clicking the ‘Vegan Wine Shop’ green button on the right, then refining the search to find what you need.

They also have several interesting articles on the site, including one explaining the animal-derived additives that can be found in many non-vegan wines.

Do they do home
delivery? Yes, they’re an online shop rather than a physical one. Delivery is
a flat rate for one or several bottles, and free over a specific amount. They
only deliver in the UK and not overseas.

My partner is half Scottish, and I lived in Glasgow for a wee while. I got to know and love haggis like a local. It’s not just a joke played

My partner is half Scottish, and I lived in Glasgow for a wee while. I got to know and love haggis like a local. It’s not just a joke played on tourists, and it really is very tasty. However, I can understand the trepidation you might feel if you’ve never tried it before. After all, it looks weird and its ingredients are an interesting mix.

If you’ve never eaten haggis, here are ten popular questions you’ll want to be answered about Scotland’s treasured national dish:

1. Is haggis a real animal?

Let’s get the myth out of the way first – no, haggises are not real animals, though it’s an animal (lamb) based product. This is an ever-popular joke played on tourists, or as an April Fool. Some very convincing little furry critters have been made up to look like haggis-sized animals, and of course they have to be hunted in the wild.

A popular version of the joke says that the haggis has its left feet shorter than its right, so it can run around Scotland’s many hills at great speed, to avoid falling over and being caught and eaten.

The whole country is in on the joke. For example, this article by Visit Scotland was published stating that the haggis had been spotted in the wild for the first time in years. The Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow – a highly respected institution – has a stuffed taxidermy haggis on display amid its real animal collection.

If you’re a tourist – expect to be told an intriguing haggis
tale in some form or another. Best to play along and be a good sport. You might
even get to eat some!

2. What is inside a haggis? What does haggis consist of?

Traditionally, haggis is made from lamb offal, or ‘pluck’ – heart, lungs, and liver. This is mixed with oatmeal, and then spices, onion and salt and pepper are added. Suet, an unrefined fat found near the kidneys, is also included, to add flavour and moisture.

The haggis ingredients are traditionally stuffed inside a lamb’s stomach but these days many haggises come in artificial casings.

3. What is vegetarian haggis made of?

Vegetarian haggis contains the same oatmeal, but this is mixed with vegetable oils and other plant-based fats along with beans, carrots and usually a couple of other fresh vegetables like mushrooms and lentils. Sometimes seeds are added for texture. The salt and spices are the same as traditional meat haggis, but of course the flavour is completely different.

4. What does haggis taste like – does it taste good?

Given the list of ingredients you may wonder if haggis
tastes good at all. It’s not too dissimilar to other products made of offal and
spices, like sausages or meatloaf. It doesn’t have that ‘rich’ taste that offal
usually does, it tastes meatier and spicier than anything else and the
strongest notes are pepper, onion and oatmeal.

I’ve served haggis to several people, including many
American friends, who were convinced they wouldn’t like it but who ended up
loving it. The best way to find out if it tastes good is to try it – most
people are pleasantly surprised!

Like many foods, you get what you pay for. Avoid cheap haggis – there are some very nasty versions of it made with more fat than meat. If you’re in Scotland as a visitor then most haggis makers and companies will display any awards they have won on the label, which is usually a good indication of quality.

5. How is haggis traditionally cooked?

Haggis is already cooked once from raw when it’s made, but it needs a second cooking and heating session before it is served.

Haggis is traditionally cooked by simmering or steaming very gently, or in the oven, placed over a pan of water to keep it humid and steamy, and to stop the haggis from bursting or splitting. Most haggises take around 40 minutes per pound of weight in the oven at 190c/375f but check the pack instructions according to its size.

You can pan fry haggis by taking it out of its skin and crumbling it into a dry, non-stick frying pan. Heat it over a gentle heat until the suet begins to melt and the meat and oatmeal crisp up a bit and turn darker.

You can also microwave it by taking it out of its skin (or
slicing it into rounds) and zapping it on a medium heat. However, both the
above methods of frying or microwaving are not traditional and they take away
from the essential part of the presentation whereby you stab the cooked haggis
with a knife, to split and serve it.

6. What is served with haggis?

Haggis is traditionally served with “neeps and tatties” or to give them their full name “champit neeps and bash-it tatties”. These two vegetables are Swedish turnips (Rutabaga in the States) and potatoes respectively.

They are never mashed as you would mashed potato – they are roughly bashed or crushed with butter, seasoning and perhaps a bit of cream or milk.

The haggis with the two smashed-up veg is how you’ll traditionally receive a dish of “haggis, neeps and tatties” if ordered in most Scots restaurants.

Very often the dish can be a bit dry, so it’s usually offered with some kind of sauce – whisky peppercorn is a particular favourite and can also now be bought already made, particularly around Burns night.

If you’re eating haggis for the first time and you’d rather not have it on its own, you can get more familiar items stuffed with haggis, such as chicken breasts or beef ‘olives’, which is rolled beef steak wrapped around a filling such as haggis.

Haggis ‘bonbons’ are balls of haggis deep-fried in a light coating (usually breadcrumbs). These are dipped in a sauce (usually whisky cream) and are delicious.

Many shops and restaurants in Scotland have other foods available with haggis as a topping or stuffing, making haggis more palatable to the uninitiated.

7. How do you reheat haggis?

If there’s any delicious haggis left, it’s best reheated by pan-frying or microwaving (see above) as by this time it will already have been taken out of its skin and can be crumbled up to re-heat.

8. How healthy is haggis?

The short answer is that haggis is not particularly healthy. It’s quite high in saturated fat and salt content. However, it’s quite rich, so you can’t usually eat a lot of it, and it does come with two hefty portions of vegetables as standard. It’s also traditionally eaten with a wee dram (a shot) of whisky, which is debatable as to its health benefits!

Like many celebratory dishes it’s not intended to be eaten all the time, although many in Scotland do as it’s available all year round. If you want to be really unhealthy, order it deep-fried in Scotland, or as a pizza topping (seriously).

9. Is haggis really banned in the USA?

Haggis itself isn’t banned in the United States, but the import of lamb’s pluck is. You can’t use lamb’s pluck as an ingredient in food in the US either. Therefore you can’t import a haggis from Scotland to the USA, for example, but you can buy a USA-made haggis that has been made without the lamb’s pluck.

McKean’s (known as McLay’s in the UK) make traditional haggis without the lamb pluck. I haven’t tried them, but they have a good reputation. If you would like to have the presentation of stabbing and slicing the haggis (e.g. for Burns Night) then this is the type of haggis you’ll have to get.

If you just want to taste haggis, there are a few canned
versions of it in the USA, but many of them seem to contain beef, which isn’t
traditional and won’t taste the same.

10. Where to get REAL haggis in the USA?

Air fryers have come into the limelight recently for their ability to cook foods in a healthier way, with less oil and less fat. One of the things that they’re best for is cooking a batch of lovely crispy chips!

So, if you’re someone who loves your chips and are looking for a healthier and easier way to cook them – this might help. I’ve put together the best 3 air fryers on the market, what they’re best for, and all their features and benefits.

Best Overall Air Fryer For Chips

COSORI

This smart Wi-Fi Air Fryer by COSORI is very easy to use because it has ‘presets’ – push one button to tell it what to do, and it’ll do it.

It also allows you to choose your own temperature, from 75°c to 205°c, and cook time, from 1 to 60 minutes, for your personal recipes. The foods cooked in this COSORI Air-Fryer apparently contain up to 85% less fat than when they are cooked traditionally.

One of my personal favorite things about this air-fryer is that it is Wi-Fi and app-controlled, which allows you to schedule, adjust and monitor your fryer from anywhere.

You can schedule cook times up to 4 hours in advance, so if you’re someone who feels that they don’t have the energy (or time) to come home and cook after work, you can throw what you want in the air fryer before you leave, schedule the cooking time from the app and when you come home your dinner will be ready.

It works well for cooking both fresh and frozen chips, due to the adjustable temperature and pre-heat settings. It also tells you through the app when the preheating is done and reminds you when your chips need a shake so they’re perfectly crispy every time.

If you’re looking to fry something other than chips, the app also contains over 100 pre-programmed recipes to help you get started, and new recipes are added every week, from dinners to desserts (yes, desserts…. not tried this yet, but what’s not to like?)

The removable air fryer basket is non-stick so when frying you don’t have to add a ton of oil as you would with deep frying, just add 1 tablespoon of oil for the whole recipe. It’s also dishwasher safe so not only will you save time on cooking, but the washing up as well.

Pros:

Smart features, including Wi-Fi and app controls

Adjustable temperature and cook time for personal recipes

11 presets

Intelligent monitoring, reminders when to shake food

Ability to set the fryer going up to 4 hours in advance

Removable, non-stick and dishwasher safe basket

Touch screen

85% less fat than traditionally cooked foods

Only 1 tablespoon of oil needed for a whole recipe

5.5L capacity

Cons:

Some reviewers have said that this has a strong ‘plasticy’ smell that takes a while to go

This is the one I use when I occasionally give in to my three boys’ endless requests for homemade chips.

It uses 3D air pulse technology to cook fried food that is delicious and crispy, with a small amount of oil compared to traditional frying.

It has adjustable temperature controls from 80°c to 200°c and also has an automatic shut-off feature once the food is cooked, meaning there’s no risk of overcooking and making it safe for a family home with small children. It has a digital touch screen that’s easy to read and 8 cooking settings too, including chips, pizza, and roast.

It has a removable basket and grid so you’ll have no trouble removing your food from the fryer, it also means that any excess oil drains to the bottom of the bowl for healthier results. The basket is also dishwasher safe.

Many reviewers have said that when comparing their frozen chips cooked in an oven to this, this wins every time. The chips are evenly cooked, crispy, and not the slightest bit soggy.

You can set the temperature to anything from 80°c up to 200°c as well as the length of time, which counts down as you cook. It also opens at the front, rather than the top, which allows for easy storage as it’s more compact.

The large 4.5l capacity allows you to cook a whole meal at once. This is especially useful for those who have young children and don’t have much time to keep an eye on separate oven timings, just throw in your nuggets, fish fingers, or whatever you prefer, in with the chips and they’ll all cook at once. Plus, there’s less washing up to do after too.

Both the air fryer tray and the basket can be removed for ease of cleaning and they can either be hand-washed or thrown in the dishwasher.

It has an automatic shut-off safety feature once it’s finished cooking, making it safe to leave unattended. I also love that this air fryer comes with a book of delicious recipes for you to try to really get acquainted with the machine.

Reviewers have said that this works perfectly for both frozen and fresh chips, too.

Do Air Fryers Make Good Chips?

Pretty much everyone who owns an air fryer seems to agree that yes, air fryers do make good chips! Air fryers use hot air and a small amount of oil to cook chips, with far less oil than your traditional chip fryer. This of course makes them a lot healthier for you, as it’s said that air-fried chips made contain up to 80% less fat. They’re still starchy carbs, of course, but if you’re going to eat them – why not make them that wee bit healthier?

However, there is a way to ensure that your homemade chips are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and that means you should remember to shake them throughout the cooking process.

Most people assume that when they get an air fryer they can just throw the chips in and they’ll be done, which is the case as they will be cooked and crispy. Nothing wrong with that, but, if you want really evenly cooked chips, then shaking them halfway through the cooking time will guarantee the best results.

I also suggest taking them out when they’re golden brown, rather than just when the timer says so.

Air fryers also make really good sweet potato fries. Due to the excess starch content in sweet potatoes, making crispy fries in your conventional oven is almost impossible unless you can get it mega hot- they come out limp and soggy. An air fryer can give you those restaurant-quality results, due to lower oil content and evenly distributed heat.

Can You Put Frozen Chips In An Air Fryer?

We all know that frozen chips are much more convenient when we have busy lives, as you can just buy a packet and keep them in the freezer for when they’re needed, so you’ll be glad to know that you can put frozen chips in an air fryer.

When cooking chips that are frozen in your traditional deep fat fryer, they taste great but they’ve been cooked in such a huge amount of oil that can make them greasy, as well as adding extra fat and calories that simply isn’t needed. Most people have no idea how to deep fry properly (or can’t measure the temperature) so the chips absorb a load of oil.

When preparing frozen chips in a conventional oven, you have to preheat the oven, spread them all out evenly on a baking tray, and flip them halfway through, only for them to not be as good as they would have been had you fried them.

That’s where an air fryer such as the ones mentioned above comes in. Not only does it give you the same results as a deep fryer with only one tablespoon of oil (at most), it cooks the chips in half the time than it would take cooking them in the oven. What’s not to love?

After reading this article, I hope that you found all the information you were looking for! Air fryers are a great investment for all sorts of meals, not just chips and there are plenty of air fryer recipes online to get you going. You’ll wish you’d bought one ages ago, especially if you have kids.
